When Frank Thomas hits the Cooperstown stage this July, there will be no doubt what cap he'll be wearing. Undoubtedly, he'll become the first Chicago White Sox player in the Hall of Fame since Nellie Fox was inducted in 1997.
Sure, the newly elected Hall member spent the vast majority of his career in "The Windy City", but he did play nearly three seasons outside of Chicago as a member of the Oakland A's and Toronto Blue Jays. And along the way, you've gotta think the Sox wished they had keep him in the fold.
So, how did the team make it up to their living legend?
First, they let the two-time MVP retire as a member of the team, signing him to a one-day contract in February 2010. Then, six months later…they retired his jersey. In 2011, the White Sox immortalized the slugger with a bigger than life, bronze statue on the outfield concourse at U.S. Cellular Field.
Wednesday, the team purchased a full-page ad that will run in both of Chicago's newspapers.
Classy.
