In the National Football League, the mascots don’t usually draw the attention from the fans, that award usually go to the cheerleaders, yet you can’t take anything away from these furring loving personalities, they help fans cheer on their favourite teams whilst getting everyone else involved. The idea of having grown-ups don these wacky costumes is rather absurd but it works; it gets the crowd pumping and it is easy to understand why the majority of the NFL franchise utilizes these mascots. These characters have brought us some of the best moments in sporting history and even brings in a revenue for the clubs as the mascots sell merchandises for each team and serves as a symbol for each franchise, with that said, let’s have a look at some of the best NFL mascots to step foot on the field:
Blitz – Seattle Seahawks
It must be rather difficult for our Blitz, because the Seahawks apparently contains the loudest stadium in the NFL, at times Blitz can get overshadowed. With that said, he must be doing something right? He takes in the boisterous atmosphere and uses it as an advantage- keeping the fans roaring at all times and justifying why Seattle have earned the nickname ‘The 12th Man’
Big Red – Arizona Cardinals
Arizona can boast that they did as well as any team in the league in regards to turning a logo into a walking NFL mascot; Big Red is near identical to their team logo that appears on the player’s helmets and uniforms. Arizona fans have enjoyed the support of this mascot in getting fired up for the match ups. He is one of the more athletic mascots on the list and he even has a body frame to play as wide-receiver! Big Red stands at 6’4” and has a seven-foot wingspan!
Swoop – Philadelphia Eagles
This character is everything you want from a mascot. The eagle has an intimidating look to his outfit which fit is in well with the Philly sports as fans are known for being some of the roughest and loudest throughout the whole country. But Swoop is passionate, gets the crowd roaring and is also an inspiring symbol as we usually see him carrying an Eagles flag out onto the field eight Sundays in their calendar season. Because of Swoops intimidating yet passionate persona makes the mascot one of the best in the NFL.
Ragnar the Viking – Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings have taken having a mascot to another level, not only do they have one, but their mascot is also an actual living person rather than a stuffed animal. Joseph Juranitch plays the role Ragnar, and the actor is a one of a kind NFL mascot as he is the only living one filled in the world of stuffed animals and cartoon figures. Imagine if this trend followed on… for example, what if the New York giants used WWE wrestler The Big Show to represent a giant? Having a real life mascot makes it more entertaining for those tailgating fans to interact with.
