Who is Tyler Ferguson and is he Penn State’s next target?

So who’s next for Penn State?

With Jake Waters picking Kansas State over the Nittany Lions Thursday morning, many Penn State fans were wondering if there would be more than one quarterback on the roster when spring practice starts.

As soon as Waters chose to go to Manhattan, Kan., rumors started flying about Tyler Ferguson.

Ferguson was a first-year, junior college quarterback for the College of the Sequoias in California this past season where he threw for 2,614 yards and 24 touchdowns. The 6-4, 210 pounder also threw 12 interceptions.

While those numbers aren’t nearly as good as Waters (3,501 yards, 39 TDs, 3 INTs), it should be noted that this was his first year out of high school while it was Waters’ third. Ferguson’s numbers this past season are comparable to Waters’ first-year (really his second year) numbers for Iowa Western. Waters also played only two games his true first year because of injury. He wasn’t the outright starter that year either.

News also came out today that Ferguson had committed to Houston. It is being reported by multiple outlets that is not actually the case and that he would accept an offer from Penn State if it came.

Waters decision certainly could open the door for that.

In addition to Houston, Ferguson also has offers from Florida Atlantic and Akron. Coming out of Ridgeway High in Bakersfield, Cal., the lanky quarterback had offers from UCLA, San Jose State, Fresno State and Washington State.

He led his Ridgeway to a 9-3 season his senior season while his Sequoias team went 4-6 this season.

Ferguson will have three years of eligibility remaining and will likely enroll in whichever school he picks in Jan.
