UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn revealed today that his next title defense will be at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi on April 10th:
But who should be given the next shot at Penn’s belt? Kenny Florian is probably the next best 155er in the UFC, but he just got crushed by Penn last summer. Newcomer Takanori Gomi is still at least a fight or two away from being a legit title contender (he’s rumoured to be fighting Florian in his UFC debut). Gray Maynard is fighting Nate Diaz this upcoming Monday, but he is a possibility if he puts on an impressive performance and comes out of it in good health. Frankie “The Answer” Edgar might very well be the answer, as he’s on a three fight win streak (including a win over former champ Sean Sherk) and last fought in early December, so he should be ready to roll by April. At this point, we’ll put Maynard and Edgar as the early favourites, but it is doubtful anything will be decided until after Maynard’s match at Fight Night 20 on Monday night. Stay tuned fight fans!
