Why can’t we just embrace Fitzpatrick?

So let me get this straight? Ryan Fitzpatrick has started 28 regular season games, which happens to be six less than what Trent Edwards accomplished in Buffalo, and he’s done something that you’d want almost every single NFL caliber quarterback to do, and that’s to get better. Over his last nine games, Fitzpatrick has 21 touchdowns and over 2,100 yards passing. He’s got two games of four touchdowns, all on the road. He’s broken the stench of 4 years without a 300-yard passer in a game. Barring injury, he’s going to be the first Bills quarterback, since Drew Bledsoe in 2002, to get over 20 touchdown passes for a season. Hell, if he surpasses 26 touchdown passes, it would mark the 2nd most in franchise history for a single season. So, what the hell is the problem here? (Click “Read more” for the rest of the article)

Mark my words, if these numbers were being put up by JP Losman, Trent Edwards, Todd Collins or a young prospect, who was being spoon fed to us as being the future, then we wouldn’t be talking about Andrew Luck. We would be talking about how we had our answer at QB. I don’t know if Fitzpatrick’s draft stature (7th round) has something to do with it or if the fans are just sick and tired of having their feelings hurt. I get that we’ve seen these sort of performances from other QBs over the years. Losman’s game against the Texans in 2006 comes to mind. Edwards’ 5-1 start to the 2008 season. I can go on and on when it comes to fool’s gold for this team regarding QBs. However, when you follow the body of work of Fitz and compare his 2009 season to what he’s accomplished this season, it’s like day and night. Just look at the Jets game in Toronto last year. For me, the talk of the town regarding Fitz, shouldn’t just be about how he’s having such a great season, but just how bad he was last year and how his game has improved so much. That’s exactly what you would want to see from a QB who will be starting his 29th NFL game on Sunday.

I also think that fans and media memebers who are obsessed with the Bills losing out to get the first pick in the draft, have either totally lost faith in the franchise or are trying to sell media ads. It really makes me sick when people keep begging for the Bills to lose out and whenever Fitzpatrick makes a bad throw, everyone on Twitter goes apesh#t. OK, I’m one of those people who gets annoyed when Fitz makes a bad throw, but so do all the other NFL Quarterbacks…even “The Great Luck” makes a bad throw. I’m also not stupid enough to be obsessed with the team losing out because of having visions of the Next Jim Kelly getting off a private jet, shaking Bill Polian’s hand, throwing a football to Bob Koshinski and riding out in a stretch limo. People need to get off this crap.

It’s completely small time to think that the first pick in the draft will completely change your franchise. Its like people counting on Bass Pro to change the fricken waterfront. Or Jim Kelly buying the team. Get over it, and realize that one man can’t just change the franchise. Could the first overall selection help? Sure, but it’s not a slam dunk. People are acting like Andrew Luck is going to be a godsend. I don’t know what makes everyone so certain. I swear, didn’t we hear all about this with guys like Tim Couch and JaMarcus Russell? And then you have people who never watch college football, come out and declare their vast knowledge of scouting Luck. Whatever. Oh, and what happens next year? Do we beg for the Bills to bottom out again? Lets just field a team from Sweet Home High School. Just stupid. Also, how many legit franchise QBs are their in the NFL? And when I say franchise, I’m talking about a guy you can put on a team and have the neighborhood dogs run routes. I’d have to say there’s like what? 10 maybe?

Anyways, I’m not sure where I’m going with this post. I think what I’m trying to say is that we shouldn’t be so quick to throw cold water on Fitz’s run so far. I know there’s a lot of football left, but can you imagine what would happen if Fitz played well against the Steelers? Of course, he could play like complete crap. Either way, Fitzpatrick has me looking forward to Sundays and if he’s the guy next year, I’ll be completely cool with it.
