Why did the Redskins move Trent Murphy back to linebacker?

With a dramatic weight change faster than you can say “Josh LeRibeus,” Trent Murphy will go back to Outside Linebacker.

The official reason is for depth since the Galette injury.

The problem with that explanation is that the Galette injury happened a couple weeks ago.

The real reason is either 1) The backup outside linebacker depth is so weak, Trent is needed more there or 2) The depth on the Defensive Line is so deep, there really isn’t room for Trent there or 3) Both.

After hearing reports of Reyes and ZIggy Hood both really showing up well, I think the answer is #2 – the numbers were not going to work on the D Line and there was no way they were going to cut Murphy after his bulk up.

The numbers on the D Line just do not add up. Baker, Golston, Reyes, Hood, Paea, Ricky Jean Francois — already at 6 — no reason to have Trent here when they will likely keep an extra man in the secondary rather than add a seventh to the D Line.

Editor’s note: Murphy added weight to reach 290 pounds to play defensive end. Outside linebackers weigh in at 260 pounds or so. The Redskins list OLB Ryan Kerrigan at 265-lbs. and Preston Smith at 268-lbs.
