You wouldn’t believe it by scrolling through the CD headlines the past couple of weeks… but I think we can all admit that ‘this’ was coming a bit to easy for the 2014 Cardinals.
Not that they weren’t capable of winning and winning consistantly – they obviously are. But the fact that we all expected a complete dogfight all of September and instead were in the middle of a receiving line strewn with lavender scented Lilly petals?
Yeah… didn’t feel quite right.
So the Cardinals, not able to have nice things, went into Cincinnati and dropped 3 of 4 games to one of the worst teams in the NL the second half of the season.
Let’s run through the checklist:
1) Lack of runs? CHECK!
The Birds haven’t scored a run in 17 consecutive innings after plating 2 in the top of the 1st on Wednesday night.
2) Pissing away good pitching? CHECK!
Lance Lynn twirled a gem on Thursday afternoon and deserved his 16th win. Instead he got the big F-U from his teammates more worried about their dinner plans with the family.
3) Questionable managing? CHECK!
Words that we never want to see again: ‘Peter Bourjos pinch hit for Yadier Molina in the 9th inning’.
Old habits die hard, and the Cardinals are slip sliding back into the team that has failed to launch umpteen times in 2014.
So here we are. Middle of September. Heading into a 9 game home-stand. Swearing THIS is the stretch of games where the Cardinals are finally going to put it together and get 6 or 7 of 9.
We’ve got a new mantra for the season:
Prepare for the worst. Hope for the best. And never, ever gamble on this team.
