Why the first round rules

The Stanley Cup Playoffs is the best sports tournament in the entire world. Nothing can beat it, not the NCAA Tournament, the UEFA Champions League, nothing.

Sixteen teams needing sixteen wins to hoist the greatest trophy known in sports. There isn’t even an argument regarding that point. The Stanley Cup Playoffs are a two month journey that requires perfect timing, a lack of injuries and a few good bounces.

The best part of this entire journey might just be the first round. All sixteen teams are in action, there are at least four games each night and there is a better than good chance that you will see overtime each day.

The first day of this year’s tournament was nothing short of fantastic. Five games, overtime and two shutouts. The Detroit/Phoenix series is bound to be a slug fest and the Rangers seem to be capable of giving the Capitals a true scare. Tampa and Pittsburgh will be a tight series that might just come down to goaltending. Vancouver looks to be a little too deep for Chicago and the Ducks might not have the goaltending to keep up with the Predators.

Doesn’t matter. This is only one day of about two weeks of a crazy amount of hockey. Catching the early game and the late game each night will deprive you of sleep but it is so worth it. Drink it in people, the first round will be over before you know it.
