The Celtics have way too many guys on the roster, so they’re going to have to make some cuts. Once of those cuts will very likely be newly acquired guard Will Bynum.
Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and guard Will Bynum are expected to meet on Saturday, according to two NBA sources, and the team is likely to waive Bynum, who was acquired Friday from the Detroit Pistons.
Bynum, 31, is in Boston and will take his physical before he and his representatives meet with Ainge. NBA sources said the Celtics are content with their point guard lineup of Rajon Rondo, Marcus Smart, and Phil Pressey, leaving Bynum out of the equation.
This isn’t much of a shock. Bynum wasn’t brought here to be the back up, back up, back up point guard. Once Rondo’s back, there won’t be many point guard minutes to go around. Bynum was brought in to save the team a little money.
So about that meeting today…

Celts acquired Bynum Friday. Says Bartelstein: “We’re going to evaluate the landscape and figure out what’s best for Will and the Celtics”

I smell a buyout coming. I think Ainge and the Celtics want to further save a few bucks by buying Bynum out and taking less of a cap hit. I think Bynum could sign somewhere… even if it’s for the minimum. If the Celtics pay him $1.7 million to leave (saving themselves another million in cap space), Bynum can sign somewhere for the $1.2 million minimum and still make his $2.9 million for the year.
However this goes down, it’s pretty clear that Bynum is probably never putting on a Celtics jersey.
Will Bynum is in Boston and completed his physical today. He will not be with the team today or tomorrow.
