Randy Orton is what we like to call unpredictable, and that has become very clear in the last few live events. But one thing that I think will surprise everyone is if Orton joins John Cena’s team for the upcoming Pay-Per-View event, Survivor Series.
Orton has been a dominant member of The Authority. He’s been one of the strongest competitors alongside Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, Kane, and Mr. Money in the Bank Seth Rollins. But once Orton realized that Rollins was becoming the face of WWE, he decided this needed to be changed.
For weeks, we have seen the threatening stares towards Rollins before The Viper finally snapped and attacked Rollins. With the events of Survivor series approaching quickly, The Authority made it know that Orton would be given one match against Rollins. Once he got his anger out of his system, they would forget this animosity and focus on the match against Cena and work together.
During the Rollins vs. Orton match, Rollins surprisingly was victorious. At the end of the match, Rollins offered Orton his hand so they can shake and move on but Orton had a different plan. He RKO’d Rollins, leaving him lying in the ring. He then attacked Triple H, trying to prove that this feud was not settled.
When Triple H got up, he ordered that Orton be finished. Rollins grabbed Orton and curb stomped his head into the steel steps. Leaving Orton bleeding and no longer a member of The Authority, everyone is wondering what he will do next. I think it would be a great plot twist to see him as a member of team Cena.
The rivalry that Cena and Orton have had has lasted over a decade is reason enough for them to now join forces and go against the people they want to beat the most.
Orton and Cena came into the WWE around the same time in 2002. Cena made his first television appearance on July 27, 2002 answering and open challenge by Kurt Angle. This was the start of Cena showing his aggression and passion for his place in the WWE.
Orton made his first appearance and his first televised event against Hardcore Holly on Friday Night Smackdown on April 25, 2002. Orton became a fast fan favorite and received a bunch of other matches until a shoulder injury left him sidelined for months. He still remained on Raw during his News Network segment, which ultimately led him to the villainous superstar that everyone knows and loves today.
Both superstars started within months of each other and their careers have gone in pretty much the same direction even though each has taken a different approach. Each man has become a star and world champion several times throughout their careers.
Five years after Cena’s first victory over Orton, they faced each other again where Cena formed a team with Shawn Michaels and dethroned Edge and Orton as tag team champions. This defeat only made the flame that was kindling, that much bigger. Later that summer Orton and Cena met for the WWE championship where Cena kicked out of Orton’s RKO and locked in the attitude adjustment to hold onto his title.
Orton escalated this feud by bringing Cena’s father out into the ring and punting him in the head. At their next match at Unforgiven in 2007, it ended with Cena viciously pounding on Orton until Cena was disqualified. But after this Cena had an injury to his pectoral muscle and the feud was halted and Cena’s WWE title was taken from him.
In 2008 at the Royal Rumble, Cena made his surprise return eliminating Triple H in the 30-man match, then challenging Orton for his WWE Championship where Orton won by disqualification.
The feud halted until they met again in 2009 at an “I Quit Match” at the Breaking Point paper-view. Being able to punish Cena was something Orton had been waiting to do for a long time and this made him excited for this match. But Cena made it clear that he had more heart and drive than Orton and he would become victorious.
The two superstars then competed in the first Hell in a Cell match. Normally this would be the ending of a feud, but for this two that was not the case. After Orton won the Hell in a Cell match and the WWE title, they met again in an Iron Man match where Cena regained the WWE championship and the rivalry settled for a little while.
The most recent meeting of the two was at Hell in a Cell where they both competed to see who would go on to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Seeing these two fight in a cell again excited fans and the victory of Cena was well deserved.
At Survivor Series, The Authority has been given a match against Cena and four other wrestlers in a five-on-five elimination match. The catch is, if The Authority loses, they will lose their control over the company. So far, The Authority’s team consists of Kane, Mark Henry, Rusev, and Rollins while Cena’s team includes Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Sheamus, and the Big Show. This leaves one spot left on each team.
Now that Orton is no longer a member of The Authority and we have not seen him on the past few live events, joining team Cena would be the ultimate surprise for WWE fans. In my opinion, it would be amazing to see two superstars that have been in a rivalry for over 10 years join together and take out the enemy. As the saying goes, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
