There are not many good images of Redskins rookie RB Chris Thompson. Perhaps he will change that against the Bills Saturday night.
Chris Thompson's college highlights had Redskins' fans drooling ever since his being drafted in the 5th round. It's that blazing speed and those incredibly fast cuts.
His Alfred Morris-underdog story and likeable character only contributed to the idea that "Thompson will be the lightning to Morris' thunder, the Robin to Batman."
The first thing to chip away at those hopes was Thomspon's inability to fully practice most of the summer due to his knee recovery. Then came his preseason fumble on his second carry.
But hold on before you mumble 'practice squad.'
First off, his first scamper of 7 yards or so looked really, really good.
Secondly, he was tough enough to come in after popping his shoulder out just a few plays later. Thirdly, he hasn't had reps and is in recovery. In training camp, Kyle seem to imply that he has done some very special things when feeling healthy. He's just now starting to come around the bend in terms of health and performance. Fourthly, even if Royster is currently a better running back, he doesn't add anything other than a minor insurance policy with Alfred Morris and Roy Helu Jr. on the roster. Thompson has weapons that can be used to help the Redskins win even with a healthy Morris and Helu Jr.
So let's see what happens against the Bills. If Thompson breaks a 30 yard plus run or a 50 yard plus kickoff return, he's definitely going to make the roster. If not, he has one more preseason game to determine his fate.
