Will the Patriots Be Able to Re-sign Darrelle Revis this Off-season?

Raj: Unless the Patriots pull a 2005 Vinatieri effort with Revis this off-season, they will not be able to re-sign him. But honestly, I think they will be able to get the job done. Revis is loving his time in New England and it would be shocking to see him go elsewhere since he is doing so well here. Yes, Revis was able to go to the AFC Championship twice with the Jets, but this time in New England is more special. The reason for that is that this Patriots team looks like a team that will go to the AFC Championship game again AND will have a strong shot at the Super Bowl. Revis didn’t have that and even IF they don’t get that far, at least he recognizes there is potential with the Patriots. He won’t perform the way he did in 2009 as he gets older but he is pretty damn close to that form right now! I seriously hope the Patriots sign him for longterm now. He has earned every penny.

Kyle:  I think they will make Revis play under the contract, which has one year at a huge number and cap hit. He makes all the difference and his name is on the line which is dotted for 2015. Make him honor it.

Rick:  I think they will be able to re-sign Darrelle Revis this off-season because I think Revis wants to stay in Foxboro. Yes, he is a player that will go for the most money, but New England should be able to pay top dollar for this game changer on defense. With Revis Island in Foxboro, the Patriots have become one of the better defenses in the game as they have a shutdown cornerback that is able to stay healthy for 16 game. While New England does have a lot of decisions to make this offseason, Revis should be an easy one for the front office to make.

Derek: I think it’s going to be a very interesting negotiation.  Back when Revis signed his two-year deal, everyone assumed the huge payout due to him in the second year was simply and insurance policy that would prevent the Patriots from assigning him the franchise tag.   However, looking back at the impact he’s had so far in 2014, I think one could make the argument that the Patriots would be better off paying him that king’s ransom than cutting him and letting him depart to another team.   Revis is just that important to this defense.

Ultimately, it would be in both the team’s and Revis’ best interest to iron out a long-term contract.  The Patriots could avoid devoting a huge portion of their cap to him next season, and Darrelle would get the big pay day he so clearly deserves.  The question here is who has the leverage?  The team that has him under contract for one year and can block him from obtaining a long-term deal, or the player who is due a massive amount of money?  It’s hard to say for certain, and that’s why I’m hopeful that there can be some mutual give and take, as opposed to Revis’ other contracts where the team gave and he took.
