Over the last 24 hours or so, the Tennessee Titans and the other 31 teams in the league were forced to make some tough decisions as they faced Saturday’s deadline of reducing their roster size from 75 to 53.
“The Turk” was a busy man yesterday, as his slicing and dicing led to the temporary postponement of the aspirations of many vets and rookies of being on an NFL roster in 2009.
As a result of the decisions made by Jeff Fisher and crew, the Titans may be on the lookout for some help via the services of one or two of “The Turk’s” league-wide casualties.
Let’s take a look at some available players who could be of interest to the Tennessee Titans.
Returners
With the release of designated Chris Carr replacement Mark Jones, a punt/kick returner could be on the Titans’ radar.
The name that could be at the top of the team’s list is ex-Raider Justin Miller, a former Pro Bowler who returned two kicks for touchdowns in 2008. Shortly after Chris Carr’s decision to bolt Nashville for Baltimore, Miller visited Baptist Sports Park as a free agent. Miller chose the Raiders over the Titans, which led to the aforementioned Mark Jones signing a few days later.
With Miller once again on the open market, I wouldn’t be shocked at all if the Titans renewed their interest in the services of one of the game’s better kick returners.
Other returners released who could be of interest to the Titans are Yamon Figurs and Skyler Green.
Ex-Titans Courtney Roby and Adam Jones are also available, but needless to say, a Nashville reunion isn’t in the cards for either of those two.
Cornerbacks
Due to the release of veteran “Petey” Faggins, the Titans may be in search of some veteran depth at cornerback.
Eric Green was a guy who, like Justin Miller, visited the Titans during the offseason as a free agent. Like Miller, Green also believed that the grass was greener on the other side, opting to sign with the Dolphins instead. After being released by Miami, Green also failed to stick around in San Francisco, who cut him yesterday.
Green has good size (5’11”, 196 lbs), has some starting experience and is still relatively young (27).
The list of available veteran corners also includes players such as Rod Hood, ex-Raven Corey Ivy, the ancient Deltha O’Neal and ex-Jag Brian Williams.
O’Neal and Williams have seen better days, so I’m not too enamored with the prospect of adding either of the two. However, I wouldn’t be opposed to the signing of Hood or Green, two young vets who unlike O’Neal and Williams, aren’t on their last legs.
Wide Receivers
Bringing in some veteran depth may also be a possibility at the receiver position. The team already worked out Matt Jones, Samie Parker and Jerry Porter last week, but none of them signed on the dotted line.
Cutdown day produced a few more names that the Titans could consider. David Patten is 35 but as recently as 2007, was a very productive receiver in New Orleans’ pass-happy offense. D.J. Hackett started out his career in Seattle, which is also the former home of current Titan General Manager Mike Reinfeldt. If he can stay healthy (a big if), Ronald Curry could be another option.
Slim pickings, to say the least. Color me not too enthused about the thought of adding any of these guys.
