As we mentioned shortly after a draft that saw the Tennessee Titans bring in additional bodies at the wide receiver position, the chances of Paul Williams sticking around in Nashville have dwindled.
Mired in the quagmire of inconsistency throughout his first two seasons in the NFL, Williams has yet to fulfill the promise that GM Mike Reinfeldt saw in the Fresno State alum during the 2007 Draft.
With the news that Williams won’t be ready to practice again until training camp as a result of injuries, one has to wonder if his days in a Tennessee Titan uniform are coming to a grinding halt.
Selected in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft, the collective hopes at Baptist Sports Park were high on the chances of Williams turning into a solid pro. With the attributes of size and speed and a lengthy wingspan, many, including Jeff Fisher himself, believed that Paul would eventually become a fixture at the WR position in Nashville.
Unfortunately for Paul and the Titan brass, the former Fresno State Bulldog has yet to turn potential into production at the NFL level. His ’07 rookie season consisted of numerous appearances on the team’s game-day inactive list. In 2008, his contributions were limited to only one catch in meaningless season-ending finale against the Colts.
With the team’s decision to draft Kenny Britt and the free agency acquisition of Nate Washington, Paul’s chances of becoming a contributor in ’09 have been threatened to say the least. Making matters worse for #11 are the nagging groin and ankle injuries that have led to unheralded 6th rounder Dominique Edison moving past him on the Titans’ unofficial depth chart.
Memo to Paul Williams: It’s time to step up or else your days in a Tennessee Titan uniform may be numbered.
