Willie Cauley-Stein making strides as a playmaker

It was a tough outing last night for the Sacramento Kings, losing 118-102 against the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center, making it their second straight loss. Willie Cauley-Stein led the way with 18 points, four rebounds and a block, making him the Reno Dodge Power Performer.

Notice how Darren Collison did a great job of evading defenders to find Cauley-Stein. Also, Spurs center Dewayne Dedmon came over to help Tony Parker who seemed to have went to cover Cauley-Stein but by the time he got there, it was too late.

Aside from his phenomenal leaping ability, Cauley-Stein can also play make and find open guys. Last night he had five assists. In the first video, he had many options to play with. First, he could’ve passed it to Garrett Temple, who made a successful cut to the basket, but when the reigning defensive player of the year is around, you can’t take those risks.

More than likely, Temple would not have finished this play on Kawhi Leonard. Anthony Tolliver did a great job of noticing the confusion that went on between Danny Green and Leonard and took his opportunity to get open, leading to an open 3-pointer.

In the second play, a scramble from the defense led to an open Skal Labissiere and Cauley-Stein found him open under the rim. Just shows how unselfish the second-year pro really is.

Notice how when Buddy Hield drove to the basket, Cauley-Stein’s defender went over to help. That gave Cauley-Stein a wide-open jump shot, which he can make from that area. Also, his defender came back to him extremely late. We know Pop wasn’t happy about that one.

The Kings still remain the 13th seed out in the Western Conference, and the chances of getting the eighth seed are looking more and more slim. Their next game is Wednesday as they take on the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
