It has been the quietest Winter Meetings in recent memory for the Red Sox. The team has not been rumored to be involved in any of the big free agent negotiations and have been focused on internal issues.
Today we finally have a rumor to pass along: The Sox are in negotiations for A’s closer Andrew Bailey and outfielder Josh Reddick is on the table. If Ben Cherington pulls the trigger on this deal it will mean the Sox will also have to look for a free agent outfielder for right field.
Maybe the frozen stove is starting the thaw a little.
UPDATE: If Ortiz accepts arbitration the Red Sox will have very little money to spend without going into luxury tax territory. They are holding out on Madson as his market disappears and trying to get him on the cheap, which will still be tough since he has Scott Boras for an agent. If they land Madson the Red Sox will try to convert Bard into a starter.
The Red Sox are trying to offer Lowrie or Scutaro in exchange for a starter, closer, or outfielder but have found the right match yet.
