Winter Meetings Day 3

12:12- Somehow, I forgot to bring the power cord for my laptop in to lab today. That means that I’m likely going to be updating a lot less through the afternoon. I’ll still do my best. Right now there’s two big pieces of news: the Bucs have approached McLouth, Doumit, and Maholm about extensions through their arbitration years and the Pirates and Marlins are discussing a trade that would involved Robert Andino coming to the Pirates, presumably in exchange for Ronny Paulino (though that’s not certain). These are Andino’s minor league numbers. You can’t see this, but this is me rolling my eyes.

6:12- Looks like I picked a good day to not have a computer. Not much has happened since noon, except to note that the talks with the Marlins about Robert Andino are pretty preliminary and don’t look like they’re headed anywhere. I should also clarify the “eyeroll” comment earlier; I realize that Paulino isn’t going to bring a whole lot in return from anyone, I’m just not impressed by the Pirates’ insistence on getting some kind of shortstop in a trade return this winter. The Pirates are going to be terrible next year no matter who plays shortstop. Limiting their trade targets because they want a shortstop just doesn’t seem wise to me. If they want him because they see something promising in what he did in his third go-round in AAA last year, that’s fine by me. If they want him primarily because he’s a shortstop, well, that worries me a little more.
