Wisconsin Football Adds Maryland to Future Football Schedules

The landscape of college football is clearly changing come 2014 and to that end so is the Badgers schedule along with it. Earlier tonight the Badgers released a statement that they are adding the Maryland Terrapins to their schedules in 2020 and 2021.

“The world of college football changes dramatically in 2014 with the implementation of the playoff system,” head coach Bret Bielema said in a statement. “This is another step towards strengthening our non-conference schedule and helping us recruit nationally.”

Wisconsin will host the first game in the series with the Badgers going out to College Park, MD to visit the Terps the following season. These will be first games ever between these teams, unless they somehow meet in a bowl matchup before then, which is highly unlikely at this point.

The Terps are the 2nd ACC opponent to be announced as a future home and home series after Virginia Tech was added for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Wisconsin last played anyone from the ACC in the 2009 Champ Sports Bowl, beating Miami 20-14 in Orlando, FL. The last regular season game against an ACC foe was in 2005 when Wisconsin traveled to Chapel Hill and beat North Carolina 14-5 in Barry Alvarez's final season at the helm of the football team.

Right now Maryland is in the 2nd season of the Randy Edsall era and are 4-2 this season overall and are currently on top of the ACC Atlantic Division at 2-0 in conference play. They have made 7 bowl appearances in the last 11 seasons as well.

Overall this announcement means the Badgers will face at least one BCS level opponent for each of the next 9 seasons in a row and expect that to continue into the foreseeable future with the way the new playoff system will be measured.

At this time no other opponents for the 2020 and 2021 seasons are know.
