The Wisconsin Badgers continued their charge towards a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament as they dispatched the Minnesota Golden Gophers at home on Saturday. Player of the year candidate Frank Kaminsky scored 21 and Bronson Koenig scored a career-high 17 as the Badgers cruised to a 10-point win.
Senior guard Josh Gasser reached the 1,000-point mark with his second basket of the first half. He joins Michael Finley as the only Badgers to reach 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 250 assists.
The Badgers (25-2, 13-1) maintained their three-game conference lead over Maryland, Purdue and Michigan State. Maryland (22-5, 10-4) is on a three game win streak, winning all three games by 9 points combined. Freshman guard Melo Trimble scored 26 points, with six rebounds and five assists in their latest four-point win at home against Nebraska.
The two teams will meet this week for a pivotal conference matchup. According to TiqIQ.com, there are fewer than 450 Wisconsin tickets for their game against Maryland. The average ticket price is $90.75 with a get-in price of $56.
Accordingto Hipmunk.com, Baltimore hotels are available for as little as $85, cheaper than the average price of tickets to the game. Baltimore flights from Madison are a little pricier, obviously, but you can find some connecting flights for a couple hundred bucks. With the Badgers needing all the support they can get, it’s a pretty low cost for fans who want to see them play in enemy territory.
Conventional wisdom has the Badgers getting a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament if they were to win out and win a Big Ten conference championship along with the conference tournament championship. After the game with Maryland, Wisconsin takes on Michigan State at home and finishes their season on the road with two road games against Minnesota and Ohio State. The 2015 Big Ten men’s basketball tournament will be held from March 11-15, and returns to the United Center in Chicago for the ninth time in event history.
Wisconsin 10-game streak is the longest conference win streak since closing the 1940-41 season with 11 straight Big Ten victories. The 25-2 start matches the 2006-07 season as the best 27-game start in school history.
