Why he fits
Any offense could use a tool man like Kaminsky. The reigning men’s college player of the year demonstrated a repertoire of skills and high I.Q. this season.
Kaminsky’s finds comfort in set jumpers. It extends past the arc and makes him deadly in the pick-and-pop. The Kings, who have been looking for a Ryan Anderson-type stretch four for years, could use the big man that way.
Additionally Kaminsky can put the ball on the floor, set up teammates, rebound and score with finesse post moves. The polished 22-year-old gives the game his all, and can be expected to produce in Sacramento from day one.
Why he doesn’t fit
A struggling defensive team like the Kings likely wouldn’t see its back end improve with Kaminsky on the floor. While he’s over seven feet, the Badger possesses a pedestrian wingspan and isn’t a great shot blocker. Additionally, his strength will have to improve or he’ll get abused inside.
Kaminsky more naturally fits the mold of a power forward in the pros, but his subpar athleticism and agility make him a liability guarding the perimeter. Whether DeMarcus Cousins and the Kings’ supporting cast can hide his weaknesses is not backed by recent past.
There’s the question of his worth long-term to Sacramento. The Kings want to win now, which Kaminsky can aid, but would a young, misunderstood veteran swapped for the No. 6 pick make more sense than a college senior with limited upside?
Likelihood he’s available
Strong. Despite Kaminsky’s NBA readiness, general managers would have a tough go rationalizing the investment of a top five pick with the one-way player. The deep pool of high-ceiling frontcourt prospects like Karl Towns, Jahlil Okafor, Kristaps Porzingis and Willie Cauley-Stein essentially guarantee Kaminsky’s availability at No. 6.
