In what was arguably the best World Junior Championship to date, the Lightning had four prospects take part. Andrey Vasilevskiy (Russia), Jonathan Drouin (Canada), Adam Erne (USA) and Henri Inonen (Finland) represented their countries proudly. Here is a quick review of their play in the tournament.
Prospect goalie Andrey Vasilevskiy had an outstanding tournament, leading Russia to a 4-2 record and the Bronze Medal. He ended with a 1.83 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. Vasilevskiy gave up ten goals on 150 shots. The 6’4”, 201 lbs. netminder was selected as the best player on Team Russia by the coaches. He was selected as The Player of the Game twice during the tournament, including the Bronze Medal game against Canada. Vasilevskiy showed tremendous puck handling ability throughout the tournament. In 15 games in three World Junior tournaments, Vasilevskiy is 10-4 with a 1.89 goals-against average, a .946 save percentage, three shutouts and three medals. (Photos/Susan Ferlita)
Prospect forward Jonathan Drouin had an up and down tournament, but managed to rank fifth in points with nine (3 goals, 6 assists) in seven games. Drouin netted a power play goal and finished with a +5 rating. He was superior in the faceoff circle, winning 59.14% of his draws. The 5’11”, 185 lbs. forward was fourth in penalty minutes with 24. He was selected Player of the Game versus the Czechs. While Drouin’s slick offensive skills were on display, he did not handle adversity well. He needs to mature and that will come with more experience. He is still a slam dunk to make the Bolts NHL roster next season.
Prospect forward Adam Erne was a non-factor for Team USA. He played physically, but was able to muster only one assist, 13 shots and a -1 rating in five games. Erne projects as a third or fourth line forward.
Prospect forward Henri Ikonen had one goal, two assists, 18 shots, two penalty minutes and an even rating in seven games for the Gold Medal winning Team Finland. Ikonen had a limited role, bouncing between the third and fourth line.
