Wolves 83, Bulls 67

Jefferson had 26 points and 20 rebounds, and Gomes added 25 points and
10 boards to help the Timberwolves to an 83-67 victory over the Chicago
Bulls on Wednesday night.

The 150 combined points tied for the second fewest in a game this
season. Only the Miami Heat’s 75-72 victory over New York on Nov. 11
was more inept.

Well, if Gordon, Deng, and Smith are out, and Hinrich and Nocioni don’t play
well, Bulls basketball becomes "where 67 points against the TWolves happens"

Wolves record: 9-36

Wolves
guard Rashad McCants won’t play tonight against Chicago because he’s
ill. McCants has the flu and will remain home rather than attend the
game at Target Center.

To the game itself, Rashad McCants is inactive for Minnesota tonight. Some around here wonder if a trade is in the works.

After Chicago won the front end of a back-to-back against the Wolves
Tuesday night in the Windy City, neither team arrived in Minneapolis
until 3 a.m. Wednesday morning (maybe the plane froze on the
airstrip?). Perhaps fatigue played a role early, because saying that
both teams were sluggish after the tip is an understatement. The teams
combined for just 22 first-quarter points (14-8 Chicago), missing the
first 18 shots of the night. Not good.

By the end of the opening 12 minutes, the T-wolves — the owners of the
worst record in the league (9-36) — had set a team season low for
points in a quarter with eight. Their previous low for a first quarter
was 15, their total Tuesday against the Bulls, who managed all of 14
first-quarter points Wednesday.

The play of Jefferson and Gomes delivered the Wolves’ fourth victory in
their past six games and their ninth of the season, ensuring with
months to spare that their season will not approach the historic
proportions reached by the 9-73 Philadelphia 76ers in 1972-73.

So, too, did only seven turnovers in the final three quarters after the
Wolves committed that many in the first quarter alone, a defensive
tag-team effort on guard Kirk Hinrich and a bigger lineup that featured
Michael Doleac’s important eight-minute, four-point performance while
guard Rashad McCants was out ill.

Jefferson had 26 points and 20 rebounds on the final
night of games before the reserves for the NBA All-Star Game are
announced today. His 26 points gave him 3,000 for his career.

He recorded his third game this season with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds.
