Wolves Updates 1/22

Wittman said identifying leaders is part of the key objectives this season. Ryan Gomes and Al Jefferson made their case Monday.

Gomes and Jefferson made big plays when it mattered.
They combined for 12 points in the fourth quarter and shot 4 for 6.
Gomes finished with a career-high 35 points, and Jefferson added 21
points and 12 rebounds.

Timberwolves rookie SF Corey Brewer’s minutes have been cut almost in
half in January, making at least one scout wonder whether he was the
right pick at No. 7. The scout has been disappointed in Brewer’s
athleticism and energy level: "I don’t see him being anything more than
a role player," he says.

Mike Kahn/Fox Sports gives out mid-seaon awards and lists Brewer as the most disappointing rookie:

Joining Horford and Joakim Noah as one of three top 10 picks from the
two-time champion Florida Gators, nobody questioned Brewer’s
athleticism. But his shooting, well, it appears he finally got it above
30 percent – even to 35 percent. But on a bad team like this, they
needed a lot more than that from the seventh overall pick.

Kahn also names Kevin McHale the league’s worst GM and has Antoine Walker listed as the worst defensive player.

Now the Wolves are coming off back-to-back strong efforts on the road.
And Foye — who hasn’t played this season because of a stress reaction
in his left kneecap — appears on the cusp of returning to practice
full time. As a rookie, Foye showed a penchant for playing his best in
the fourth quarter. This season, the fourth quarter has definitely not
been the Wolves’ friend.

So Wittman sees hope. Whether Foye is ready to return to full-contact work in practice is likely to be determined today.

Sports Network on Gerald Green defending his slam dunk title:

The 6-foot-8 Green will square off against Memphis’ Rudy Gay, Orlando’s Dwight
Howard and Toronto’s Jamario Moon as part of the All-Star Saturday Night
festivities on February 16.

"I’m honored to represent the Timberwolves in the dunk contest and I’m excited
to show off some new dunks I’ve been working on," Green said. "All-Star
Weekend is a lot of fun and it’s a great experience being on that stage and
showing the fans a good time."

From NBA.com:

For the first time, fans will have the final say in deciding the winner
of the Sprite Slam Dunk competition. Following the concluding round of
dunks, fans will be able to cast their votes via SMS TXT message and at
NBA.com to determine this year’s winner. The dunker with the most fan
votes will be named the winner of the Sprite Slam Dunk. A panel of
judges will continue to play a key role by determining which two
participants advance to the final round. During the final round, each
judge’s vote will count the same as a fan vote.
