Wolves Updates 5/25

Look for the Timberwolves to at least try to sign a veteran free agent before next season.

"But it’s difficult to get some veterans if you’re not a playoff team," owner Glen Taylor said. "It would take a special type of player."

-Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, asked if he’s being patient in rebuilding his team: "I have to be."

The Minnesota Timberwolves (3rd overall pick), Seattle Sonics (4th overall) and Grizzlies (5th overall) have all expressed interest in Beasley, and some arrangement could probably be reached with the Heat that would land another young up-and-coming player in Miami if they were to pass on Beasley.

Minnesota Timerberwolves assistant general manager Fred Hoiberg, whose
team picks third, points to another example in last year’s draft, when
Greg Oden and Kevin Durant were the top two selections. But Al Horford,
picked third by Atlanta, was the only player among them to help get his
team into the playoffs.

”They talk about this being a two-person draft, similar to last year,
but Al Horford probably had as big an impact as anybody in the class,”
Hoiberg said. “Even though you don’t get one of the top two, the third
pick brings a very good player.”

From Jim Souhan/Star Tribune:

The earliest rumors (or lies) from NBAland offer the possibility that
the Bulls will take Memphis’ Derrick Rose, the Heat will take Mayo and
Kansas State’s Michael Beasley could fall to the Wolves at No. 3. If
that happens, disregard all of the above.

Beasley is the player I want. If he’s not available, the Wolves get
creative, trade down, get rid of one of their problems and take a
couple of guys who might be just as good as the player selected No. 3.

Then, next year, when the Wolves have the first pick in the draft, they can take a star.

Jason Fleming/Hoopsworld on various members of the draft class of 2004:
Sebastian Telfair, Minnesota Timberwolves: A lot of people had counted Telfair out, but when Randy Foye went down with a knee injury he showed he really can lead an NBA team. He will never be the devastating scorer some expected, but his court sense has improved greatly and he could be a solid backup anywhere. Still, that place could be Minny if the price is right.

Kirk Snyder, Minnesota Timberwolves: Snyder played well with the Wolves after being traded from the Houston Rockets, but the fact is he plays a position that already has Rashad McCants. Hopefully Snyder proved enough during his time in Minny to show teams he just needs the right situation.

The first player we saw as we entered the gym was none other than a very sleek-looking Dwyane Wade, here to get an intense workout in (using FIBA basketballs) with Tim Grover before heading off to New Jersey later that day to help the Miami Heat secure the #2 pick in the NBA draft. Later on, other NBA players like Bobby Simmons, Antoine Walker, Andre Brown and Dajuan Wagner stopped in for their own personal skills and conditioning workouts, and also joined in for the five on five games, which is a big plus for those here trying to see what it takes to reach the next level.

Kevin McHale of the Minnesota Timberwolves should have a shot at
picking Mayo with the third choice in the draft. He told reporters the
allegations would not, in any way, cause him to question the wisdom of
choosing Mayo.

“Tell you what,” McHale was quoted as saying. “If you said that every
person who ever took any money in college would not be drafted, it’d be
slim pickings.”

At least he’s not professing blindness. He sees it. It just doesn’t bother him.
