The Blazers confirmed to HOOPSWORLD that the team has given Penn permission to speak with the Wolves regarding their open GM position…

Warren LeGarie – who represents Tom Penn – spoke with HOOPSWOLRD late Friday afternoon, saying the decision is now up to the Wolves on how they would like to proceed in discussions with his client.

“The process is now in their (Minnesota’s) hands. At this juncture, any comments that should come out further should come from them. We’re in a little bit of a holding pattern,” LeGarie said.

“The nice thing in this case is he (Penn) is ready for the opportunity and has certainly preped up for some very good people like Kevin Pritchard. They’ve had a good run together – and they do fit well together he and Kevin – but at the same time, Kevin was in a similiar situation a few years ago.

“It is bitter sweet, but you like to see collegues get the opportunity.”

Simmons also has the inflated ego to compete with the best of them, thinking that a GM job is much easier than it looks and assuming that sales of theTimberwolves brand will skyrocket simply because of his presence. But Simmons can’t expect to match wits with his counterparts by continuing to toss insults their way. Such actions will only get him black-balled in a strategic game of NBA GM cut-throat.

Penn’s name surfaces two days after former Indiana Pacers general manager David Kahn emerged as the Wolves’ apparent favorite.

Kahn has declined to discuss his talks with the team, but at last report he had yet to receive a contract offer.

The other confirmed candidates are former Miami Heat general manager Randy Pfund, Wolves general manager Jim Stack and Wolves assistant GM Fred Hoiberg.
