Wolves Updates 6/15 Part 2

Former Bad Boy Bill Laimbeer’s resignation today from the Detroit Shock’s head-coaching job in the WNBA has created speculation that he’s headed to the NBA in general and the Wolves in particular.

My guess is that he stays in Detroit and ends up replacing Michael Curry as Pistons head coach.

I don’t think his decision is related to the Wolves’ situation. But if it were, I’d think it would be as Kevin McHale’s top assistant and not as head coach, since Kahn still is talking with McHale about the job and as far as I know, hasn’t begun the process of a coaching search.

This morning, we had a chance to sit down with David Kahn in an informal breakfast featuring several other members of the Twin Cities sports media. He met with the team’s beat writers Friday, so some of the information here is a rehash of what he told them. We combed through Jerry Zgoda’s excellent Saturday piece based off that meeting and tried to include things below that either advance what he said or touched on other areas not covered. Kahn basically answered questions for about an hour, and in the interest of full disclosure — since we were driving, to an extent, the Bill Simmons for GM madness — we have to say we came away impressed by the man. He has a clear vision. He speaks with both depth and common sense. Of course, as he also knows, he will not be judged by his likability or even his plan, but his ability to make the right moves — particularly during what he acknowledges are a very important next 16 months…

This could be the week when new Minnesota Timberwolves executive David Kahn decides whether to retain or release Kevin McHale as coach.

The pair will meet for a third time at an undisclosed place and time to discuss McHale’s status with the team. Having a former NBA head coach on his staff has been discussed, but that’s not imperative. It would be surprising, if McHale were retained, if a deal would be for more than two years…

One position the Wolves are not planning to take in the draft is power forward. Kahn said star Al Jefferson is ahead of schedule recovering from a torn ACL last season. It’s clear the Wolves will pursue a pure point guard via the draft, free agency or trade.
