Wolves Updates 6/20 Part 2

All of which means … what? That those players are among the four
Minnesota is considering with the No. 3 pick? That they are guys the
Wolves
want teams to think they’re considering, as a smoke
screen? Or that they are players Minnesota would be glad to have from a
spot or three down in the draft, hoping to generate enough leverage to
trade the pick for another, with a few side benefits thrown in?

In
terms of need, Minnesota ought to be looking for a legitimate point
guard or a center who could relieve Jefferson of that role. It already
has shooting guards such as Foye (a "combo” it would like to use at
point), Brewer and Rashad McCants. But the best talent at No. 3 might
overlap what it already has, suggesting a possible move.

Indiana guard Eric Gordon will be at the Target Center on Monday to work out for the Timberwolves as they continue to evaluate prospects for Thursday’s NBA draft.

My guess is that Mayo is the third player selected in Thursday’s draft
because he is the only talent some scouts rate right up there with
Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley. My hunch is that UCLA’s Kevin Love is
your next Timberwolf…

Love, on the other hand, seemed genuinely smitten with the idea of
becoming a Timberwolf when he visited Target Center this week. His
stock has risen big time and the Wolves are deliberating deeply how his
outside game in the frontcourt would complement Al Jefferson’s inside
game. Love’s skills, particularly passing abilities to invite
comparisions to old-school Wes Unseld and Bill Walton, are unquestioned
In doubt is how the Wolves would fare defensively with two guys no
taller than 6-9 and not the most athletic fellas in the world anchoring
their center/power forward positions.

For this rumored deal to be consummated, either Minnesota’s pick needs
to be included in a complicated three-team trade, or else both Miami
and Memphis must wait out the third and fourth picks on draft night
before launching a Beasley-Mayo exchange.

"I don’t believe it’s going to happen,” said an executive of a team
with a top 10 pick. "I hear Minnesota is now saying they’re going to
take Mayo, which is the smart thing for them to do.”

Also from Thomsen:
The Timberwolves have been difficult to project. By many accounts,
they’ve liked Brook Lopez, Mayo and Love. If somebody wants to trade up
for their pick to take Mayo at No. 3, they’ll be interested in
listening.

The Timberwolves need another inside presence and could also use more scoring. Arizona’s Jerryd Bayless, Stanford’s Brook Lopez, Kevin Love of UCLA, USC’s OJ Mayo and LSU’s Anthony Randolph are all possibilities at No. 3. Minnesota cannot afford to make a mistake with this pick.
