Wolves Updates 7/14

Tonight, Love makes his professional debut — well,
sort of — when the Timberwolves open their five-game summer league
schedule with a matchup against the Dallas Mavericks at the Cox
Pavilion on the campus of Nevada-Las Vegas.

It will mark his first pro-level play, albeit
against summer league teams composed of first- and second-year players
and a slew of free agents who likely won’t last long in the league if
they do muster a contract.

Still, Love believes it is fair to use his performance over the next few games as a barometer.

Jerry Zgoda/Star Tribune on the Las Vegas summer league:
Roster: The 11-player roster includes two Wolves rookies from
last season — forwards Corey Brewer and Chris Richard — as well as
first-round pick Kevin Love. Others include former Gophers players
Vincent Grier and Dan Coleman, St. Thomas Academy product Dan
Fitzgerald (Marquette) and Rochester John Marshall product Longar
Longar (Oklahoma).

Today: vs. Dallas, 9 p.m.

Wednesday: vs. L.A. Lakers, 7:30 p.m.

Thursday: vs. Portland, 9 p.m.

Saturday: vs. Milwaukee, 7:30 p.m.

Sunday: vs. New York, 3 p.m.

Foye awoke the day after the NBA draft to find O.J. Mayo, his Wolves
backcourt mate for about five hours, gone to Memphis, along with three
other players for the draft rights to UCLA forward Kevin Love, shooter
Mike Miller and big guys Jason Collins and Brian Cardinal.

"I heard fans were upset about it," Foye said. "To me, it’s a great
deal. I don’t think you can do any better than that on draft night.
This is going to be a fun season, a fun season for the whole franchise."

Foye practiced with the Wolves’ summer league team over the weekend as
it prepared for its Vegas opener tonight against Dallas. He will not
play in any of the five games this week…

Randy Wittman is looking for a Timberwolves assistant coach now that Bob Ociepka has decided to join the staff of the Chicago Bulls. "I let Bob go for only one reason," Wittman said. "His home is in Chicago and he has family there. Otherwise, I would have held him to his contract." … Regarding the recent trade the Wolves made to acquire Calvin Booth and Rodney Carney from the 76ers, Wolves owner Glen Taylor said the 76ers are paying all of Booth’s $1.1 million salary and about two-thirds of Carney’s $1.6 million.
