Wolves Updates 7/15

-Timberwolves rookie Kevin Love was measured at 6 feet, 7 3/4 without shoes at the NBA predraft camp, with a wingspan of 6-11 1/4, a standing reach of 8 feet 10 and 12.9 percent body fat. Love also had a 35-inch vertical jump and a 3.22-seconds clocking in a three-quarters court sprint.

-Pssst: Among reasons the Timberwolves were eager to trade Antoine Walker, who was dumped on Memphis, was the questionable influence he was starting to have on star Al Jefferson.

Wolves brass hoped to see that transformation continue at the Las Vegas
summer league, where Carney agreed to play following the trade. But he
watched Monday night’s opener against Dallas from the bench, sidelined
on a team already lacking scoring punch by a sore hamstring that flared
Sunday in practice.

"I hope we get a look at him," said Wolves coach Randy Wittman,
uncertain if Carney will play in any of five games. "His athleticism,
it’s a good thing. But it’s one thing to be athletic. It’s another to
understand where their athleticism comes in and where it doesn’t. In
drills, those athletic guys can really stand out. When it’s 5-on-5,
sometimes it’s a different story.

…The Wolves have until Oct. 31 to pick up Carney’s fourth-year option
for the 2009-10 season or he will become an unrestricted free agent
next summer.

Brewer shot a woeful 37.4 percent from the field last season.

"Like a lot of players, it takes a year — and
sometimes two — to get your feel in and find your niche in this
league," said Timberwolves assistant coach Jerry Sichting, who is
coaching the Wolves’ summer league team in Las Vegas. "Corey is a
winner, he’s a great kid, and he’ll find that niche."

Brewer’s shooting problems persisted in Minnesota’s
88-74 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in their summer league opener on
Monday night. Brewer totaled 11 points (5-of-18 shooting) and seven
rebounds.

In other news, Glenn Schwartzman, the agent for Darrell Armstrong and
Michael Doleac, has spoken to the Magic about interest in the veteran
point guard and reserve center. Nothing is imminent at the time,
Schwartzman said, but Orlando could seemingly use help at both
positions. And the Magic are infinitely familiar with both players.

Representatives from the Minnesota sports community
participated in a simultaneous tee-off at noon on Wednesday, July 9, to
mark the official launch of 2009 PGA Championship ticket sales at
pga2009.com. The tee-off was held at Hazeltine National Golf Club,
Chaska, Minn., home of the 2009 PGA Championship. Participants included
(front to back) Tim Brewster, University of Minnesota; Corey Brewer, Minnesota Timberwolves; Fred Hoiberg, Minnesota Timberwolves; Brad Bombardir, Minnesota Wild, Jim Dauwalter, 2009 PGA Championship general chair; and Minnesota high school golf champions.
