Wolves Updates 7/26

Financial details of Gomes’ contract were not known, but it is believed
to be for at least three seasons. The Wolves had the right to match any
offer Gomes received from another team.
Last week, the Wolves signed Smith, 24, to a two-year, $4.8 million
contract. Wednesday, they finalized a contract with Telfair that will
pay the 23-year-old $2.3 million next season and $2.5 million in
2009-10; Telfair has the option to return for a third season for $2.7
million…
The Wolves also are expected to announce the hiring early next week of
assistant coach Dean Cooper, the Houston Rockets’ vice president of
basketball operations last season. Cooper will replace Bob Ociepka, who
joined new Chicago Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro’s staff.
Jessica Camerato/Hoopsworld lists Corey Brewer as one of the second year players who “needs to worry after their summer league performances “
Corey Brewer needed to redeem himself at the Las Vegas Summer League. It didn’t happen. Brewer came into the NBA with high expectations as a defensive specialist with a reliable offensive game but  failed to make an impact on the Minnesota Timberwolves during his rookie season. His struggles continued in Vegas as he was inconsistent at the basket, knocking down 19 points one game and a single free throw the next. He capped off summer league with a strong performance (he averaged 9.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in five games) but the athletic forward is still a long way from reaching his potential.
The former Erwin High and North Carolina standout came out for his
annual Shoot for the Cure event Friday afternoon. The Asheville native
and current Minnesota Timberwolves player brought a small entourage of
family and friends and a stack of photos to sign. Just a few yards in
front of him, youths shot at a pair of basketball goals that could end
up rewarding a contestant with $10,000.

“I love coming back to Asheville for Bele Chere,” said McCants, whose
Shoot for the Cure tournament wraps Sunday afternoon. “I’m excited that
this year we’re able to help local families with Feed the Children.”

POPS Mensah-Bonsu has rejected Badalona’s contract offer and is in talks with four NBA teams.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu, the Great Britain forward, has turned
down a lucrative deal with Badalona, the Spanish side, after opening talks
with four NBA clubs. The 6ft 9in Londoner, 24, was offered a £670,000,
one-year contract after performing well in Italy with Benetton Treviso last
season.

But he impressed the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA summer league in Las
Vegas last week and has opened talks.
