Wolves Updates 8/10 Part 3

The Minnesota Timberwolves have worked out final contract details with restricted free agent center Ryan Hollins.

The Timberwolves signed the former Dallas center to an offer sheet on Aug. 3. The Mavericks had seven days to match Minnesota’s three-year deal worth more than $7 million, but declined. The deal was completed Monday.
Minnesota Timberwolves president David Kahn says point guard Ricky Rubio’s buyout situation is “still very problematic” and he remains unsure of when the fifth overall pick will come to the United States.
But Rambis’ hiring will be overshadowed by the Ricky Rubio soap opera until a resolution occurs. Will Rambis be coaching Rubio or not? Well, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com Monday that the door is “wide open” for Rubio to join the T-Wolves rather than stay in Europe for the 2009-10 season. Otherwise, Rubio’s Spanish team, JKV Joventut, already would’ve announced his transfer to another European club by now.

Rambis is optimistic that a buyout agreement can be reached that would clear the way for Rubio to join the T-Wolves this coming season. Perhaps Rubio’s camp simply wanted to see who would be coaching him in Minnesota before proceeding aggressively to negotiate his release. Either way, it is extremely doubtful that Rambis would’ve agreed to take over in Minnesota if he thought there was a chance that the Rubio situation would mar his tenure.
From John Schuhmann/NBA.com: Rooks ready for lesson on other side of NBA life
“The things on the court are the easy part of the NBA,” the Timberwolves’ Jonny Flynn said at the Rookie Photo Shoot on Sunday. “It’s dealing with life situations and the things that come at you off the court that we don’t know anything about.”

They’ll know more after this week is over. From Monday to Wednesday, the class of 2009 will be in Rye, N.Y. for the Rookie Transition Program (RTP), where they’ll sit in classrooms for 12 hours a day learning anything and everything they’ll need to know about playing in the NBA.

Thirty-five of the rookies were at the Knicks’ practice facility on Sunday for the Rookie Photo Shoot, where they posed for their first NBA trading cards. When asked if they knew anything about the RTP, the most popular answer was, “It’s long.”
