Usually you’d be seeing Cassia doing these posts, however she has gotten an amazing offer and is now working in TV land and we wish her nothing but the best. But moving on, a lot will happen in the world of Badgers Women’s sports over the next few weeks and we’ve even got a glimpse into the fall and winter sports for you!
Women’s Track & Field is set to compete at the NCAA Preliminaries at the University of Texas. After placing 5th at the Big Ten Championships in Madison last weekend 16 members of the Women’s Track & Field team will be in Austin competing this weekend in hopes of moving on to the NCAA Finals next weekend.
They’ll be led by the “multi-event” trio of Dorcas Akinniyi, Jessica Flax, and Deanna Latham who finished 1-2-3 at the Big Ten in the Heptathlon. That event isn’t in play this weekend, but they all qualified for events on an individual basis for this weekend.
In each individual event the Badgers will compete to make the top 12, which qualifies them for the NCAA Finals next weekend.

Outside of the competition going on in spring sports, the Women’s basketball team will compete in the 6th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge against Virginia Tech. The Badgers are 3-2 overall in the challenge, owning a victory over Virginia Tech in the 2008 edition of the challenge. The game is scheduled to be played on Wednesday November 28th in Blacksburg, VA.
Sticking on the scheduling front, the Women’s soccer team announced their 2012 schedule earlier today. It features a challenging non-conference schedule that pairs them against 4 teams that played in the NCAA tournament (half of the non-conference slate) last season.
In fact they kick off the regular season at home against one of those teams, Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish also were ranked No. 1 entering last season and bowed out in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament.
After two more home games the Badgers go on a very interesting three game road trip as they head out west to California and then back to the state of Wisconsin. They will take on national power UCLA (2nd round NCAA tournament last year & No. 2 seed) on Aug. 31st and then stay in LA to face Loyola Marymount. The trip ends with a rivalry game against Green Bay on Sept. 7th.
The other highlights in the non-conference schedule are back to back games against Illinois State (defending MVC Champion & NCAA tournament qualifier) and a trip to Milwaukee to face the Panthers (NCAA tournament 2nd round).
Wisconsin opens Big Ten play at Penn State on Sept. 16th for the Badgers. The Nittany Lions played into the 3rd round of last seasons NCAA tournament. The Badgers open Big Ten home play against Michigan and Michigan State the following week.
