Workman Didn’t Shine in Hole Left By Lester

The Red Sox pulled Lester from his scheduled start yesterday in anticipation of him being traded before the deadline.  Brandon Workman was recalled from Pawtucket and tapped as Lester’s replacement.  Workman struggled through 5 innings and didn’t exactly give a Lester worthy performance.  The Sox offense was once again no where to be found and the Jays completed the sweep against the Red Sox.

Workman allowed the Jays to get out to an early lead when he gave up 2 runs in the 1st inning.  Navarro hit an RBI single and then Francisco hit an RBI grounder to 1st.  Sox 0-2.  Workman didn’t give up any more runs until the 5th inning, but then the Jays blew the game wide open.  Gose scored on a throwing error from Workman that allowed Reyes to reach safely at 1st base.  Cabrera then got on base by way of an error by Bogaerts, Navarro hit an RBI single and Francisco hit an RBI infield single.  Sox 0-5.  That basically put the game to bed for the Red Sox.

The Sox were able to get their one and only run against Buehrle in the game in the bottom of the 5th.  Vazquez hit a ground rule double to bring Bogaerts to the plate.  Sox 1-5.  Unfortunately the Jays got that run right back in the top of the 6th.  Breslow took the mound for the Sox and found himself in a little bit of trouble.  Breslow gave up an RBI single to Navarro.   It could have been two runs, but Cabrera was thrown out trying to get home.  Sox 1-6.  Andrew Miller took the mound for the 7th and had himself another stellar performance.  Miller put down the Jays in order striking out the side along the way.  Badenhop pitched the 8th and while he gave up 2 singles, none of them came around to score.  Koji Uehara hasn’t had many save opportunities as of late, so he came to the mound in the 9th because he needed the work.  Koji may have been in a non-save situation, but he still had himself his usual 1-2-3 inning.

Red Sox 1  Blue Jays 6  BOXSCORE

WP: Buehrle (11-7)  LP: Workman (1-4)
