The Sox started a 3 game series with the Seattle Mariners and had rookie Brandon Workman on the mound vs. Joe Saunders. Workman has pitched well in his last 2 starts, but hasn't been able to get a win yet. Workman continued the trend of pitching well and finally got his first win in a Sox uniform.
Workman only gave up one run in his outing and he gave that one up in the top of the 1st. Workman gave up an RBI single to Morales to have the Mariners leading 1-0. No worries though because the Sox got Workman the lead by the time the bottom of the 1st was over. The Sox tied the game on a passed ball when Victorino was able to get to home plate from 3rd. The Sox took the lead when Papi hit an RBI single to score Pedey. Sox 2-1. The Sox added to the lead in the 2nd when Ellsbury hit a solo HR and then Pedey hit a 2 run HR. Sox 5-1. The Sox added another run on in the 4th when Pedey hit an RBI single to score Victorino. Sox 6-1. Workman just kept trucking along and keeping the Mariners off the scoreboard. His biggest challenge was in the 6th when he had one out and the bases loaded. Workman got 2 strikeouts to end the inning without allowing any damage. Workman was done after 6 inning and his pitching line was 103 pitches, 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB and 9 Ks.
Breslow came out in the 7th and pitched a scoreless 7th inning and then Thornton pitched a scoreless 8th. The Sox added on two more runs in the bottom of the 8th when Salty hit a 2 run homer. Sox 8-1. In the 9th, Pedro Beato took the mound to close the game out. Beato ended up giving up a single run when he gave up an RBI single to Blanco, but the Sox got the 3 outs they needed to get the win.
The Rays won last night as well, so the Sox are still 1/2 game back, but it was a nice win to keep the team close.
