WSU Gameday Flag-Spotting, Thanksgiving Weekend Edition

Happy Gameday Cougs!  Here’s hoping the holiday weekend is treating you well.  The Gameday crew set up shop in Stillwater, and yes, the Coug flags made it yet again.  That’s 103 shows in a row, as the Crimson army continues to lay waste to the rest of the country (Or something like that?).  Great work to those on the ground, and thanks to Will for the screen caps:

So, quite a day in college football yesterday, wasn’t it?  First you had Auburn stage a fantastic comeback, pulling it out 28-27 at Bama.  I watched the first quarter of that game, and I left the Tigers for dead.  They looked ATROCIOUS, and at one point they had been outgained 314-2 in total yards.  314-2!?!  That’s unreal.  But anyone watching that first quarter or so, and then turning off to do something else, only to come back to it in the end and see that Auburn actually won that game?  Amazing.

Then you had the Quack attack doing their thing.  I watched most of the first half, and the Ducks seemed pretty tight to tell you the truth.  And AZ looked like they came to play, and they hung in there for a half.  But once again we see just how damn difficult it is to hang with Oregon for 60 minutes of football!  They did the same thing vs. Stanford, UW, USC, heck, even the game in Pullman saw things close for a while before the Ducks pulled away.  It’s just amazing how fast things can turn against them, and you make a couple of mistakes, they just pounce.  One more win at the Beavs next week and it’s see you in the national championship game for Oregon.

Finally, the drama last night.  Did YA SEE the Broncs literally kick away their chance at the title…..twice!?!?  Like many of the other games, I actually tuned in early to see what would happen.  After Boise State jumped to an early lead and looking pretty dominant in the process, I went off to do other things.  I check back in later in the evening, only to see Nevada down 7 with the ball and driving for the tying score!  Of course, they get the TD with 13 seconds left.  Boise State gets the ball on like their own 35, and Kellen Moore heaves it down the middle of the field….but there’s no safety help, and somehow, Titus Young makes an amazing, diving catch at the 9 yard line with one second left!  Chip shot field goal attempt from 26 yards, right down the middle of the field.  Money in the bank with a senior kicker, right??……

WIDE RIGHT!  We’re going to OT!

But that’s not all.  After Boise State gets the ball to start the extra session, they drive inside the 10 but then the offense stalls.  Still in good shape though, with a 29-yard field goal attempt right down the middle, almost the exact same spot that they missed to force OT….and it’s wide LEFT!

Unreal.  Then Nevada’s kicker steps up and drills the 34-yarder, dead-solid perfect.  GAME OVER, BCS hopes over for Boise State.  Now they are left to sift through the possibility of dropping from the BCS title game, to maybe the Rose Bowl, to now probably looking at the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl!  And it looks like TCU will get that Rose Bowl spot if Oregon and TCU both win next week.

Call me crazy, but I mentioned it early in the year that the Nevada game could be really dicey for Boise State.  I wasn’t dumb enough to call the upset, but I definitely felt it was going to be tough.  It was the one true test left on their schedule after the Oregon State game, and as Nevada kept winning, you knew it was going to be far from the layup that people thought.  Anyway, good for them.  Yeah, they dodged a couple of bullets when Boise shanked a couple of easy field goals.  But Nevada still had to fight and rally to get the game to that point to begin with. Congrats to Nevada for their biggest win, like, ever!

I guess yesterday, with all three games having some dramatic turns, just goes to show you that no matter what, you shouldn’t give up on a game.  It’s college football, and you just never know what’s going to happen.  That’s what makes it so great!  Yesterday, in a lot of ways, is why we even bother to invest a part of ourselves in this sport, you know what I mean?  You just never know.

All for now.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and as always, GO COUGS!
