Happy Friday Cougs.  Here’s hoping your week is winding down well, and you are hopefully headed for Pullman sooner rather than later.  We won’t be able to make it this weekend, but hopefully soon we’ll get over for a home game.

So I was feeling pretty good about the game tomorrow, and even picked the Cougs to win comfortably vs. the Eags…..but then I read this about EWU’s offense.  Up to three All-American receivers who are 6-3 or taller and a QB in Kyle Padron who has so been there-done it??  I basically tossed and turned all night last night.  Jeesh, thanks a lot Cougcenter.  My employer will be sending you an invoice for all the time I will be wasting today based on the worry YOU have caused ME.

In all seriousness, CC has not only a full-blown breakdown on the Eags O, but also the D, which you can check out here.  And after reading the preview on the D?  I feel better now.   I can see the Coug O moving the ball, through the air and perhaps a renewed push to run the ball?  But I think by the 4th quarter in the heat of Pullman tomorrow afternoon (high of 91 predicted??), I believe the WSU offense will be in good shape as EWU starts to wear down a bit in the secondary.

On to today’s links…..

Christian Caple’s latest from practice has some news on a lineup change to the D.  It appears that Cyrus Coen will replace Eric Oertel as the starting strongside linebacker, even though Oertel is listed as the starter on the depth chart released earlier in the week and all that.  But it sounds like Coen has earned this shot to run with the 1’s, and that’s the way it goes.  I personally like the look of Oertel and was a little surprised to see this, but I like the “COMPETE” mantra that Pete Carroll has emphasized over, and over, and over again.  It’s a good motivator for all young players who want their shot, and a sign to not go in the corner and throw a pity-party if things don’t go your way.  In Leach’s first year, perhaps we should prepare for more changes as the season rolls on?  It sure seems like that’s going to be the case anyway.

Cougfan’s latest is a story on the 40-year anniversary of the 1972 team.  It’s cool, they went 7-4 and were ranked #17 that season.  But it’s weird, you hardly ever hear much about the ’72 team.   ’72 wasn’t a bowl team back in the day, but that’s only because there just weren’t the number of bowls that you see today.  The only team that went bowling from the then-Pac-8 was USC, who went to the Rose Bowl.  But as Bill Moos says in the article, that ’72 team was the equivalent of a Holiday Bowl team that you might see today.

It’s cool though, in that they are honoring the past of a team that not a lot of modern fans know a whole lot about, but also the tie-in to the new Martin Stadium renovation makes sense.  The ’72 team was the first team to play in a revamped Martin back in the day after a fire burned most of it to the ground, and so it seems appropriate to have them cut the ribbon on the latest renovation!

There’s also a lot of whispers/rumors/whatever that you MIGHT see them wearing throwback uni’s tomorrow??  Hmmm. I guess we’ll see soon enough.

That’s it for now.  Enjoy your Friday, and as always, GO COUGS!
