WSU Scrimmage #2 Recap

friesen4

Big thanks to “Extermin8tr” in our comments for the recap of today’s scrimmage.  In fact, it’s so good, well, here you go:

– Nice quick tempo on the offense with Tuel under center, much improved from first scrimmage and something I hope to see more of in the Fall (no more of the geriatric damage control tempo from ’09 Apple Cup).

– The playcalling appears to be improved, in terms of accounting for what has been a weak O-Line the past two years. I won’t go into detail here as it’s not appropriate but it just seems we may have something up our sleeve to account for aggressive defenses (almost seems as if Sturdy made adjustments based on Ball’s aggressive schemes at the last scrimmage).

– For about the first 1/2 of the scrimmage the 1st team O couldn’t get a first down on the 2nd team D, and the same for the 2nd team O against the 1st team D. However, they looked better as it went along.

– Gino Simone had two straight drops, followed by a great leaping grab. I’m not sure what’s up but he seems to be dropping more “simple” catches this year (even in just drills).  Maybe time for him to start wearing gloves, although he could just be waiting to use gloves for game situations.

– Jared Byers (FB) had some great lead blocks, including one that helped Mitz scamper into the endzone.

– I believe it was Kevin Kooyman who had a heads up play to strip the RB clean, and Travis Long ran it back 30 yards for a TD.  Excellent.

– Jacobson appeared to get in another scrap, this time with Travis Long. He is an instigator all around, but I like it. I guess the bright side is that the personal fouls he gets in games in the fall will be offset by the personal fouls by the angry DE’s he’s squaring up against.

– On the same play that Jacobson/Long got in a scuffle, Andrew Roxas (C) had to be helped off the field on one leg. He was sitting and icing his knee afterwards. He was replaced for the rest of the scrimmage by Chris Prummer (6’1″ 257). This is NOT GOOD. I hope it was something minor.

– Jared Karstetter proves once again he’s the go to guy on fades with a TD in the corner of the endzone.  Good.

– Rankin appeared more disruptive this practice than last practice at DT (even before Roxas went down.) This was good to see, although he was offsides a couple times (a bit too eager).

Thanks again to Extermin8tr for the recap!
