- Really good read from Grippi in his recap, leading off with some good quotes from WR coach Mike Leveseller. While there are just four WR’s on scholarship right now who actually are available this spring, still, it’s not necessarily a bad thing, if you follow Levy’s line of thinking:
“With the ones, I think we can get a lot done,” he said. “For one thing, they are getting all the reps. I’m actually really pleased with this spring. I can give a lot of individual time in video and on the field. I don’t have to move through it really fast, I can spend quite a bit of time.”
While Isiah Barton, the JC transfer, will inject some speed into this group in the fall, and as many have speculated that a couple of the incoming frosh WR’s could contribute immediately, things look pretty good so far. And you can’t undersell the importance of the WR’s getting quality time with a coach of Levy’s caliber, a guy with years and years of excellent coaching at the position. Not to mention the chance for these wideouts to get rep after rep with QB Jeff Tuel, who is still awfully green when it comes to experience. Keep at it Levy!
- Continuing with Grippi’s recap, the defense appeared to play well. However, it must be pointed out that some key players were missing on both sides of the ball, but it was especially apparent on the offensive line. Zack Williams, BJ Guerra, Micah Hannam and Tyson Pencer were all out yesterday, some for injuries and some for school/class reasons. The defense was missing Toby Turpin and Brandon Rankin, but for the most part was intact.
- Cougfan has a recap of day four (note – it’s premium). It appears to match some of Grippi’s recap from yesterday, where the defense made some progress as they scrimmaged in Martin Stadium.
- The Daily Evergreen has a recap, with quotes, etc. They also highlight the injury to Zack Williams, the starting offensive guard who injured his shoulder a few plays into Monday’s practice. Per Wulff, it doesn’t sound too bad:
“We’re hoping we’ll get him back in a week or two,” Wulff said. “It might be longer than two. The good thing is, it’s nothing surgery wise.”
No surgery needed = GOOD news. While practicing with coaches in a structured team environment can be beneficial, especially for a team that is young and obviously neck-deep in rebuilding mode, obviously the last thing they need is some sort of major injury to a starter that could become a long-term issue. Williams is looked upon as a key cog to the offensive line’s expected improvement in ’10. Here’s hoping we see him heal up and back on the field for the last part of spring ball.
The team is off Wednesday, then they’ll be back at it Thursday. GO COUGS!
