Yankees Hit HR Derby Off Morales

The Red Sox headed into Yankee Stadium tonight and what little hope if any of the season really banked on the team being able to take a series from the Yanks.  Franklin Morales took the mound for the Sox and didn’t get us off on a very good start.

Hey, if you take out the HRs then Morales pitched a pretty good game.  However, I’ve been told it doesn’t work that way.  Morales gave up a solo HR to Nick Swisher in the 1st inning to give the Yanks an early lead.  Morales gave up back to back solo HRs in the 2nd to Granderson and Martin to give the Yanks a 3-0 lead.  The Sox were able to take the lead back in the top of the 3rd with a Ciriaco groundout and then a 3 run HR from Pedroia.  Sox 4-3.  Unfortunately, that would be the last time the Sox would score and the same could not be said for the Yankees.  In the 5th inning, Morales gave up another solo HR to Jeter to have the Yankees tie the game 4-4.  At this point, the only hits Morales had given up were homeruns.

In the 6th, Morales gave up 2 singles with one out and had runners on the corner.  Morales was out of the game and Mortensen was in.  Morty got a strikeout for the 2nd out, but gave up an RBI single to Nix to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead.  In the 7th, Mortensen gave up a solo HR to Nick Swisher to give the Yanks a 6-4 lead.  Nick Swisher hit 2 HRs in the game, one from each side of the plate.  Andrew Miller came out and finished off the 7th inning.  Miller got one out in the 8th and then handed the ball over to Andrew Bailey who got the 2 outs to end the inning.

Tomorrow is Jon Lester on the mound…if you are not scared, well…you are lying.   Followed by Josh Beckett on Sunday.  Terrified my friends.
