Yankees Honor Derek Jeter

Oh…didja hear? A tribute of some sort went down in the Bronx Sunday.

Lost in the hullabaloo that is opening week of Fantasy Football was the New York Yankees honoring their retiring captain Derek Jeter. Okay…not really. But still, Sunday was earmarked as “Derek Jeter Day” throughout New York courtesy of Mayor Bill de Blasi and, it would seem, everyone was on hand to pay their #RE2PECT, er, respect.

From Jeter’s parents, sister and grandmother to a number a Yankee greats, the list of who was on hand for the event, a veritable “who’s who” of folks from Jeter’s life both on and off the playing field. Also taking part in the celebration, Jeter’s childhood idol Dave Winfield, Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., baseball’s commissioner-elect Rob Manfred and some one-and-done former Minor Leaguer named Michael Jordan who, in 1994, met Jeter during their time in the Arizona Fall League.

“It’s kind of hard to believe that 20 seasons have gone by so quickly,” Jeter said during the ceremony. “There’s so many people I want to thank, and I’ll get that opportunity to do that over the next few weeks, both publicly and privately.”

Noticeably absent from the hoopla, Jeter’s teammate on five World Series teams, fellow member of the “Core Four”…Andy Pettitte.

But don’t fret, Yankees fans, all is still good in the Big Apple. The lefty had a good reason why he wasn’t in New York on Sunday.
