Yankees Sign Australian Teen

Melbourne teen signs with Yankees

A week after inking Japanese superstar Masahiro Tanaka to the tune of a seven-year, $155 million deal, the New York Yankees have, once again, looked to foreign soil for a fresh arm.

But, this time, they took to the land Down Under…signing seventeen-year-old Brandon Stenhouse to a "six-figure deal" earlier this week.

“It’s still sinking in and I was a bit nervous signing the contract but it is a dream come true,” the Melbourne native said.  “I was never sure it was going to happen.”

The teen sensation, was offered a contract after a standout performance at the Under 18 National championships in Canberra.  According to reports, the righty will report to Yankees spring training camp in Florida in April for two weeks of orientation before returning to Melbourne to complete his high school final exams.

"I have been waiting for many years to see if Brandon Stenhouse had the physical and mental makeup to be considered as a possible Yankee," the team's Australian scout John Wadsworth said.  "I am pleased to see just how far this young man has progressed and his future is exciting to us all.''

This past season, four Autralian-born players (Grant Balfour, Travic Blackley, Liam Hendriks and Peter Moylan) saw action in the Majors.  In the last 30 years, 27 have suited up…all but seven have been pitchers.
