The Red Sox took the mound at a Yankee Stadium in a day where it seemed to always be threatening to rain. The game was covered in a cold mist as the game continued. Jon Lester was on the mound for the Sox for his last outing of the season.
Lester got a lead before he even took the mound tonight. Ellsbury hit a leadoff single and then he came home on an RBI double by Dustin Pedroia. Pedey moved to 3rd on a Nava ground out and then came home on an RBI sac fly from Cody Ross. Sox 2-0. Lester was on the verge of giving up a first inning run, but then got Teixeira to ground into a double play to end the inning. Lester gave up his only run in the 2nd inning and it wasn’t even an earned run. Lester gave up a single to Granderson and he got to 2nd base on a throwing error from Ciriaco. Nunez hit an infield single that probably should have been an out, but the ball wasn’t handled by Iglesias and then ball went into left field. Sox 1-2. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Yanks were once again on the verge of scoring, but once again Mark Teixeira hit into an inning ending double play. Lester pitched 5 innings, however he was done for the night since the trainer came out in the 5th and there seemed to be some kind of injury.
Rich Hill came out for the 6th and pitched a scoreless inning. Hill gave up a single to Cano and a double to Nunez, but got out of the inning by getting Ichiro to fly out to center field. Tazawa took the mound for the 7th inning and pitched himself a nice 1-2-3 inning. Breslow took the mound for the Sox in the 8th and also pitched a scoreless inning. The 3rd out was recorded when Brett Gardner tried to steal 2nd and was thrown out. In the 9th inning, the Sox finally put up another run on the scoreboard when James Loney hit a leadoff HR off of Yankees closer Soriano. Sox 3-1. Unfortunately, Andrew Bailey would give those runs right back in the bottom of the 9th. Bailey gave up a single to Granderson and then a HR to Ibanez to tie the game. Bailey then proceeded to load the bases with only one out. Bobby V came out to get Bailey and Mark Melancon was in the game. Melancon did what Bailey could not and got the 2 outs without any runs scoring. Sox 3-3.
The game was heading to extra innings. Melancon pitched himself a scoreless 10th inning to keep the game tied 3-3. In the 11th inning, former Red Sox Derek Lowe took the mound for the Yankees and pitched a scoreless inning. Padilla pitched the bottom of the 11th and gave up what looked like an RBI hit to ARod but Ellsbury tracked the ball down and made the catch. On to the 12th inning we go! Andrew Miller took the mound in the 12th to deny many Sox fans of being able to see Padilla face Teixeira. Miller got two quick outs, but then he walked Cervelli and Granderson. They say that walks always come back to bite you and that was definitely the case. Miller then gave up the walk off RBI hit to Ibanez. Ibanez hit the game tying homerun in the 9th and then the walk off hit in the 12th.
The O’s won tonight, so the Yankees are still one game up in the AL East pennant race. The AL East will have to wait until tomorrow to find out who will win that race.
