Peter Bourjos has already captured the hearts and minds of Angel fans that had been clamoring for his promotion for weeks and months. After just three games, he seems to be a hit with the fan base already and since the Angel season is essentially dead now, why not keep riding the prospect train and call up some more? However, the Angels’ aren’t exactly awash in top prospects that are ready for the bigs, so they must choose their next promotion carefully.
You Make the Call! Which Angel prospect are you the most excited to see join the team next?
A) Hank Conger. The Halos are already carrying three catchers, but why not four? Conger is probably the best, major-league ready (or close to it) prospect left in the system. I have no idea where he will find at-bats, but it might not be a bad idea to bring him up to see if he is ready to contribute in the majors, thus allowing Tony Reagins to trade Napoli and/or Mathis this off-season.
B) Mark Trumbo. There is a lot of argument over just what Trumbo’s ceiling is, but he is probably the most likely Angel prospect to join the team in the near future. He’s shown good (but possibly park-inflated) power and can help fill the void at first base, so the only thing the Angels risk by calling him up, is exposing him as being less of a prospect than they have touted him as and injuring his trade value. Wait, maybe that isn’t such a good idea after all.
C) Trevor Reckling. I think this speaks to how thin the upper levels of the Angel farm system are. Reckling was the hot name in the Angel prospect lists this time last year, but he flamed out horribly when he got promoted to Triple-A and has since been demoted back to Double-A where he is starting to find his old form again. Rushing him to the bigs seems like a bad idea, but there are holes in the Angel rotation right now and it might be worth seeing if he can fill one of them.
SECRET OPTION D) Mike Trout. I don’t care if he is 19 and only in Single-A, just call the kid up! The future is now!!!
