Bobby V. has decided to go with Will Middlebrooks at third and return Adrian Gonzalez to first base for the time being. This means that Youk has to ride pine. Middlebrooks is swinging a hot bat and Youk is putting up the worst numbers of his career. The Red Sox had wanted Youkilis to put up some better numbers to increase his trade value but Middlebrooks’ production at the plate made it impossible for Valentine to keep him on the bench.
Bobby V had a chat with Youkilis that he’ll be sitting for a while and Middlebrooks will play.
