Your Morning Dump... Add Jason Terry to the long list of potential shooting guards

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Faced with the possibility of losing Ray Allen, the Boston Celtics are pursuing Dallas Mavericks free-agent guard Jason Terry, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Celtics are preparing themselves for the possible loss of Allen, and began the process of recruiting Terry after midnight ET Saturday, league sources said.

The Mavericks still have interest in re-signing Terry. The Los Angeles Clippers also have emerged as suitors, sources said. The Celtics also have interest in Los Angeles Clippers free agent guard Nick Young, sources said.

Terry, 34, averaged 15 points for the Mavericks this season.

Jason Terry would be a good, short-term replacement for Ray Allen. He’s a scorer with big game experience. Plus, he’s content with a sixth man role.

The likely problem with Terry is the contract. He made it clear to Dallas that he wants a long term deal, probably something along the lines of three years.

Terry is durable – he played in 63 of 66 games last season and has never played fewer than 74 games in a season during his career. One caveat – last season’s shooting percentage (42%) was his lowest in the past 7 seasons.

The list of potential shooting guards also includes; Jamal Crawford, OJ Mayo, Nick Young, Kirk Hinrich and Sonny Weems. There are so many variables, it’s impossible to predict which direction Danny Ainge might go. I’m intrigued with Mayo. Maybe it’s his youth, ball-handling skills and overall potential.

WEEI’s Paul Flannery offered this tweet this morning: “Don’t throw Ray Allen out the door just yet. C’s are trying to convince him to stay.”

On another note: the Globe’s Gary Washburn says “the Celtics are expected to meet with Brandon Bass’s representatives this weekend to begin discussions on a potential extension.”

We received an inquiry from a fan wondering about the status of the Celtics secondary free agents; Mickael Pietrus, Keyon Dooling, and Marquis Daniels. Don’t expect any news about those players, at least until the dust settles on the bigger names.
