The Boston Celtics have hired Erie BayHawks head coach Jay Larranaga to work as an assistant coach, sources close to the situation have confirmed.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports tweeted the news shortly before 10 p.m. today. The Erie Times-News confirmed the report with sources close to the situation.
Larranaga led Erie to the D-League playoffs in his two seasons guiding the BayHawks. He couldn’t be reached by phone tonight.
Former NBA head coach Mike Fratello had hired Larranaga to work as an assistant under Fratello in coaching the Ukrainian senior men’s national team in the qualifying round for the 2013 European Championships.
Larranaga had been scheduled to return to Erie in September to prepare for his third season leading the BayHawks. Larranaga had a year remaining on his contract.
Jay Larranaga becomes the 6th assistant coach on Doc Rivers’ staff. He joins Armond Hill, Kevin Eastman, Mike Longabardi, Tyronn Lue and Jamie Young.
I don’t know much about Larranaga. He played about Bowling Green in the early 90s and spent some time ballin’ in Europe. Here’s his Euroleague bio and a video of him mic’d up during BayHawks games. His father Jim spent 13 seasons as head coach at George Mason and currently coaches at Miami.
