Your Morning Dump… Where 2nd workouts may shed light on draft plans

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Next week’s workouts — all off limits to media — are expected to feature call-backs from previous workouts, possibly including Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield, California swingman Jaylen Brown and Kentucky guard Jamal Murray.

“We’re just trying to do as much as we can,” director of player personnel Austin Ainge said of bringing back players. “We ask for everybody and the agents let us have some of them. But we’re just trying to do the best we can.”

We’ll see who the second workouts actually include as they happen this week. Also happening this week: Dragan Bender’s workout on Tuesday. The Celtics will get their chance to see the mystery man and whether he has the skills to make it in this league.

The second workouts could be a way to determine tiebreakers at that third spot. They could also be asking some guys to come back to make up for poor first workouts (like this Marcus Smart story). And it’s not to say the second-workout guys are the guys they’ve whittled the field down to, but it’s a good sign for those guys.

And also keep in mind that guys like Murray might be considered as part of a trade deal that sends out one or more of the current guards, so don’t just think of this draft as a “draft him and keep him with the current players” thing. This draft is just part of Ainge’s overall plan for next season. Trades and free agents are just as big a part of his plan… and they are all probably very intertwined at this point.

Welcome to the NBA, boys. And this is just the beginning. These are just workouts. You’re not even going back-to-back from Boston to Cleveland so you can have LeBron run over you like a freight train the night after having to guard Paul George.

Soooo… get in those ice baths fellas and learn to take care of your bodies. You won’t be young forever… trust me on that… and the better you do with the preventative measures now the less hobbled you’ll be when you’re a bit older.
