Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
J/K it’s the Sixers.
Sorry college teams out there. That was a pretty low blow.
The Celtics announced Thursday they will tip off a seven-game exhibition slate at the University of Massachusetts’ Mullins Center with an Oct. 4 game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston’s preseason schedule features a home-and-home series with the Charlotte Hornets, plus a handful of contests against Atlantic Division opponents.
The full schedule follows below:
Celtics preseason schedule
Oct. 4: vs. Philadelphia 76ers, UMass-Amherst Mullins Center (Amherst, MA) 7 p.m.
Oct. 6: at Charlotte Hornets, Greensboro Coliseum (Greensboro, NC) 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 8: vs. Charlotte Hornets, Mohegan Sun Arena (Uncasville, CT) 3:30 p.m. ET
Oct. 13: at Brooklyn Nets, Barclays Center (Brooklyn, NY) 7:30 p.m. ET
Oct. 15: at New York Knicks, Madison Square Garden (New York, NY) 7:30 p.m. ET
Oct. 17: vs. Brooklyn Nets, TD Garden (Boston, MA) 7:30 p.m. ET
Oct. 19: vs. New York Knicks, TD Garden (Boston, MA) 7:30 p.m. ET
One of the things I don’t like or understand about the NBA is the way they have a bunch of preseason games (7? Really?) but they’re almost always bunched up against divisional rivals that, depending on the caliber of the rest of the division could make for some truly, indeed breathtakingly, unwatchable basketball.
Yeah, I know they’re not going to do preseason games between, like, say the Clippers and the Knicks, but could they at least do something to make these games between NBA franchises interesting? I mean, if the Knicks, Nets and Sixers combine to win even eighty games, I’ll be flabbergasted.
Page 2: Where Doc has plans
“If Paul decides to retire, then we’re going to make sure that Boston picks him up for one day and he retires a Celtic, because that’s what he should retire as,” Rivers said during the podcast released Thursday. “So we have all that in place. We just don’t know what he’s going to do.”
Added Rivers: “I think Paul’s going back and forth on it, and I want to give him room. I think he deserves it. From a team perspective, you would love that he made his decision eight weeks ago. I think there are certain guys that you just have to give time to, and Paul’s one of them.”

Now, on the one hand, good for Doc, not being a jerk; but on the other hand, if Pierce is going to retire, what would be the point of the Clippers refusing to waive him, in order for him to *not* retire as a Celtic?
From a team perspective, you would love that he made his decision eight weeks ago.
Just wanted to highlight that.
Just
wanted
to
highlight
that.
Because remember this?
May 3 — After Boston bowed out of the playoffs, Rivers told reporters he still hadn’t committed to another season.
“I’m not leaning that way of not coming back, I can tell you that,” Rivers said. “If I told you right now, I’m coming back. But I immerse myself and I need to just detox, and we’ll find that out.”
Now, one of two things have happened in the three years since this happened.
Either Doc understands that Pierce is putting him in kind of the same bind he put Ainge in, and Doc’s grown as a person. Or, Doc doesn’t see the screeching, clamoring, horn-honking similarities between these two situations.

…coming to training camp. Oh wait. No he’s not.
Yep. That’s what we’re reduced here in the great basketball desert of the year.
