Your Morning Dump... Where Chris Wilcox is a difference maker

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Let’s bottom line it: When Sullinger and Bass have shared the floor this season, the Celtics are minus-39.2 points per 48 minutes. The Wilcox-Bass (+13.2 points per 48), Wilcox-Green (+16.6) and Wilcox-Sullinger (+69.7) pairings all are decidedly better in a small early-season sample.

Now, part of the success of the Wilcox lineups has been his own inspired play over the past three games. It’s imperative that Wilcox maintain his intensity and production as his minutes begin to stretch out. But, at least for now, Wilcox is Boston’s best option as part of the early sub lineup.

Wilcox has made an immediate impact on this team.  And he’s doing it with one simple thing:  effort.

And that’s not to say the other guys aren’t giving an effort.  What I am saying, though, is that Wilcox’s effort stands out.  There’s been a noticeable change in the team’s energy when Wilcox has stepped on the floor.  That’s why Doc singled him out for saving a game in which he only played 4 minutes.  Because he came in and changed the energy on the floor.

But it’s not JUST effort that has produced early season success for Wilcox.  You can see he’s also more comfortable out there executing on both ends of the floor.  His rotations are crisper than others’ at this point.  He’s in places where other guys playing his position are supposed to be, but aren’t yet.

It’s still to be determined whether this can last, but the past few games have shown quite clearly that Chris Wilcox needs to be on the floor.  And the more he can play and be effective, the more Doc can rest KG.  Garnett’s been one of the few bright spots so far this season, and it’s obvious how important he is to the team.  But if Wilcox can give Doc the ability to play KG 27 minutes instead of 32, I might make Wilcox my team MVP.
