Greg Dickerson has been a staple of Boston Celtics broadcasts for the last several years. He was the C’s p.a. announcer from 1997-2002 and was a fixture on the sidelines of most every Celtics game since 2005. Last night we learned that Dickerson will no longer be the Celts’ sideline reporter:
Chad Finn-CSNNE Makes Big Changes To Celtics Coverage
Greg Dickerson, Donny Marshall, and Gary Tanguay won’t be part of the network’s Celtics coverage this season, while president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and Chris Herren are slated to fill in as color analysts on a couple of occasions.
Dickerson, the Celtics’ sideline reporter since 2005, will no longer continue in that role, though he will continue to contribute to CSNNE and NECN programming.
The affable and knowledgeable Dickerson has dealt with neurological illnesses (epilepsy and Tourette’s syndrome) that caused him to miss significant time two years ago.
If Dickerson is scaling things back to deal with his health issues, I totally get it. I’ve always liked Greg, and having had the chance to meet him a few times, I can say he’s really a great guy. I’ll never forget how hard he slapped my hand near the end of Game 6 in 2008. CSNNE’s Abby Chin will replace Greg on the sidelines but he’ll still “contribute” to CSNNE programming. What I found most odd however is that none other than Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge will be doing color commentary for certain games. Actually bizarre is probably a better word to describe it. I’ve seen him come on for a quarter here & there, but on a regular basis? Thankfully, Mike and Tommy aren’t going anywhere.
But the most familiar aspect of CSNNE’s Celtics coverage remains in place.
Heinsohn will be the color analyst for all home games alongside play-by-play voice Mike Gorman. It will be their 33d year together calling Celtics games.
When the Celtics are on the road, Heinsohn will be in studio. The color analyst role will rotate on the road among several personalities, including Dave Cowens, Cedric Maxwell, and most intriguingly, Ainge and Herren, who will join Gorman in tandem.
I’m excited to see what Chris Herren will bring to the broadcast table. Herren has come a long way and it’s fantastic to see him get a chance to be involved with the Celtics.
In other Celtics news, Rondo’s quote on he and Brad Stevens being “best friends” was the most talked about story from yesterday’s media day. Over the course of the summer, skeptics said they were concerned about how Rajon and the new Boston coach would get along.
